It is always a shame when overpowered anime characters never have a chance to showcase their ability publicly (all eyes on One Punch Man). To me, the savageness of overpowered protagonists, as well as their received public recognitions, delivered a terribly satisfying watch. With that in mind, here is the List Of the Overpowering Protagonists who Publicly Displayed Their Overpowered Strengths. Let’s begin!!
Sword Art Online
TV: 25 Episodes
How can a list featuring anime with OP protagonists not include Sword Art Online? Kirito is arguably one of the most overpowered anime characters ever.
After diving into Sword Art Online after the Beta Test, Kirigaya Kazuto, or Kirito, found himself trapped within the game and unable to log out. Worse off, he soon later realized that in-game deaths mean real-life deaths. Kirito’s life suddenly turned upside down as he desperately figured out a way to return to his former life.
As a front-liner, Kirito was tasked with the seemingly impossible mission of completing the 100th floor of Aincrad. As for being overpowered… Well, he WAS the only player within SAO’s 10,000 player-base to be awarded the skill of dual-wielding. And its effects proved to be a bit… too much.
So if you are someone who enjoys watching that one overpowered character defeating an overpowered boss, try out Sword Art Online.
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei
TV: 26 Episodes
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei is another classic example of anime with an overpowered protagonist. In a world of magic, Shiba Tatsuya, though he is a member of the powerful Shiba Clan, was unable to utilize magic. Fortunately, the First High School of Magic still somehow accepted him, but as a Weed: the lower rank.
However, we know that being magically inept does not render Tatsuya incapable of actual combat. Throughout the show, he showcased unbelievable magical knowledge and combat experiences; all of which the First High School’s students were evidently lacking. But perhaps they were simply too overwhelmed by Tatsuya’s skills.
At the end of the day, it’s all up to your interpretation as to whether or not Shiba Tatsuya was truly overpowered.
Sidonia no Kishi
TV: 12 Episodes
Sidonia no Kishi is yet another classic example of an anime protagonist showcasing great skills. Humanity was able to send their last remnants underground after an alien race named Gauna nearly drove them to extinction. Nagate Tanikaze, one of the survivors, woke up from his deep slumber and found himself unfolding the events that will ultimately determine the fate of the human race. Tanikaze must once again pilot his beloved spaceships and settle the left-over war once and for all.
Although the initial build-up to Tanikaze’s piloting skills was somewhat gradual, it was totally worth it. Tanikaze became the ace pilot that he deserved, and those who witnessed his overwhelming skills could only cheer in admiration.
Grisaia no Kajitsu
TV: 13 Episodes
One day, Kazami Yuuji is suddenly transferred into Mihima Academy. At first glance, the school building appeared normal, and everything was seemingly in its place. However, he soon realized he was living with 5 weirdos in the form of high school girls. How will his ‘normal’ student life turn out?
Yuuji is the embodiment of a badass throughout the entire anime. Furthermore, he showcased overwhelming skills in both martial arts, as well as his ability to attract women with warped personalities… All in all, his savagery is simply a must-watch for many.
TV: 13 Episodes
Momonga decided to spend his lasting moments within his beloved VR game, Yggdrasil, where he supposedly waited for its server to be shut off. However, he soon found himself in a bizarre situation. Even after the scheduled shut-off, Momonga was fully conscious. In addition, most of the NPCs have seemingly gained personalities of their own. This is the beginning of Momonga’s journey of finding the truth about Yggdrasil.
Compared to the residents within Yggdrasil, Momonga, a level 100 character with vast experience in PVP, was simply too overpowered. Simply put, the NPCs are TOO WEAK in comparison to him. Finishing fights within 10 seconds was the norm for Momonga.
Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry
TV: 12 Episodes
Set in an alternate world, there exist fighters who could transform their souls into weapons: ‘Blazers’. Ikki Kurogane, a student within the training grounds of Hagun Academy, was somehow labeled an F-rated Blazer. He who supposedly deemed a ‘failure’ as a Blazer would never have achieved the rank of Mage-Knights, or so it seems…
Contrary to these beliefs, though Kurogane lacks magical abilities as a Blazer, he was extremely skilled in practical combat. Beating the rank A Stella Vermillion was no easy feat, and certainly enough, Kurogane delivered and exceeded my expectations.
Nanatsu no Taizai
TV: 24 Episodes
Nanatsu no Taizai showed a long-lasting adventure of seven rebellious knights whose ultimate goal was to overthrow the ruler of Liones. One day, they suddenly vanished, and rumors suggested that the Holy Knights finally defeated them for good. However, after ten years, the seven deadly sins were actually still alive and were preparing for their next ultimate conquests.
At first glance, Meliodas, the captain of the Seven Deadly Sins, was only decently strong. And his power was merely comparable to that of Ban or Diane, which is nowhere near Escanor… However, throughout the anime, Meliodas demonstrated speed and strengths that simply surpassed those of Escanor’s. He really was their prideful captain!!
Don’t trust me? Watch the anime for yourself and decide whether I’m wrong or not!!
TV: 22 Episodes
When an alien destroyed the moon and threatened the world, the Japan Ministry of Defense had no choice but to abide by its command. What the creature asked for was shocking, and that was to let it be in charge of class 3E from Kunugigaoka Middle School. Left with no choice, the Ministry of Defense decided to award 10 billion yen to the student who could kill the creature. Now, the class of 3E must make a tough decision… Whether to kill the creature, namely Koro-sensei, or to remain with him throughout their Middle School career.
Surprisingly, not only was Koro-Sensei an extremely effective teacher, but he could also fly at 2.2 mach, dodge, and withstand bullets. Ultimately, the only ways to kill him were through Anti-Senseis Materials. And this furthermore showcased Koro-Sensei as an invincible and overpowered creature.
Code Geass – Lelouch
TV: 25 Episodes
Set in the year 2010, the Holy Empire of Britannia has successfully established a powerful military presence all over the world. However, Area 11, namely a terrorist group, continued fighting for their ancestor land of ‘Japan’. Unfortunately, Lelouch, a Britannia student, suddenly found himself in the crossfire between the two forces. Using a special ability granted to him, he promptly began his ultimate plan of revenge on the Britannia Royal Family.
Lelouch is by no means powerful in terms of raw strengths. However, along with a highly intelligent mind and a ‘Geass’ of ultimate obedience, this makes him a seemingly invincible character throughout. For the viewers, Lelouch would be the only mastermind criminal and leader that we all wished for.
No Game No Life
TV: 12 Episodes
Sora and Shiro, the shut-in NEET siblings view the real world as an endless and meaningless game. One day, they received a strange email challenging them to a chess game. There, they met Tet, the God of Games. Impressed with the duo’s skills, Tet personally invited them to his world called Disboard: a world that settled its conflicts through games rather than war. Suddenly, Sora and Shiro found a true purpose for them to continue playing ‘games’.
Perhaps in terms of raw strengths and power, the duo would not offer much. However, it was a completely different story when it comes to games, luck, and gambling. Along with their highly intelligent minds and teamwork, their winning streaks were yet to be beaten. Evidently, the duo was simply too overpowered for their opponents.
Hopefully, this list will give you a solid idea of the overpowered anime characters out there as well as where to find them.
